| On the 18th of June 1815 the final battle
of the Napoleonic Wars was fought at Waterloo, about a dozen miles
south of Brussels, Belgium. This was one of the most decisive battles
in the history of Europe. The Duke of Wellington was leader of the
British forces. However victory was only possible by the timely arrival
of Marshal Blucher and his Prussian army.
The first elements of Blucher's Prussians arrived in the afternoon,
but were push back. Napoleon then made his last attempt under Marshal
Michel Ney, to advance against Wellington's forces. Standing firm
until the French were very close, they attached upon orders from
Wellington. The French attack was thrown into confusion and at this
moment the Prussian army intervention on Napoleon's right flank
secured the victory in one of the most important battles in history.
