Adjutant Barber Saves Corporal Bell, Battle of Germantown, October 4, 1777
"Corporal William Bell of Spencer’s Additional Regiment was shot in the right leg at the Battle of Germantown. In a postwar pension account, Bell recalled how Spencer’s adjutant Captain William Barber “grasped me by one hand and succeeded in mounting me on his own horse, behind the saddle” and together they rode out of reach of the enemy. Barber had acted that summer as Brigade Major to Gen. Thomas Conway but was replaced the day before the battle. He is depicted here in a blue and buff uniform and green sash worn as Brigade Major. Both Barber and Bell were New Yorkers of Irish descent, serving in an at-large Continental regiment, one of the so-called “16 Additional” battalions authorized by Congress at the end of 1776. Spencer’s Regiment saw hard service at Brandywine, Germantown and Connecticut Farms." Don Troiani, April 25, 2025
