1812 Militia Button Cockade
SKU: GS2001

Early Federal Militia Cockade with Militia Button

The early United States maintained a very small regular army, believing that the state militias could be counted on for defense when needed.  Part of the decoration used on military hats and caps of the period included black leather cockades that usually had a small button or eagle added for identification of the organization the wearer belonged to.

Our reproduction is copied from a surviving example of one worn by a member of the Ohio militia serving at Detroit during the War of 1812. This common style was worn by many militia organizations from 1810 to 1820.

This cockade comes with a reproduction of a militia officer style button in our collection dating from the 1814 to 1820 period and would have been worn on a variety of hats, caps and helmets of the period.

Each cockade comes packaged in an attractive box and can be used as a display item, or attached to a reproduction hat of the period.
