3rd Waldeck Regiment, 1776
"I just finished this one, but it will be the last German for a bit. American Revolution; Watercolor and Gouache on paper. A soldier of the 3rd Waldeck Regiment 1776 (Waldeck was a German principality, these were not Hessians!). The ruler of Waldeck rented most of his small army to the Dutch which provided the income for the state. For British service in the Revolution he raised a 3rd Regiment to serve in American. They fought well in the New York Campaign at Fort Washington and later at Pensacola where they surrendered to the Spanish. They seem to have been armed with Dutch muskets and swords."
