42nd Royal Highland Regiment Pipe Major, Grenadier Company, 1758-67
Whether military or civilian, the executive director of any pipe band is the Pipe Major. The position is an appointment and not a rank, although an appointee is required to have attained the rank of at least sergeant. As Pipe Major he is responsible for the managerial and custodial duties of the pipers under him. And, as his primary responsibility is to rally and organize formations of troops headed to and on the battlefield, he works in close proximity with the commanding officer. He plays a three droned set of pipes with the regimental banner flying from the first drone further emphasizing his pride of place.
