The Anglo-Saxon name Broga means “terror” and this Saxon attacking with sword held high befits the title. A most prized weapon, the sword
was very valuable and often handed down from one generation to the next. Swords were considered to have a greater value if they had a provenance, perhaps having belonged to a famous warrior, taken as a prize in battle, and clearly imbued with the previous owner’s bravery. At the time of the migrations from Germany to England some warriors might still have been using swords of the late Roman pattern called spatha. These blades were between 29" to 32" long and 3" broad with a shallow, groove or fuller down the center of both sides. This lightened the blade without losing any strength.
