Confederate General Pierre-Gustave Beauregard
A fiery and ambitious Louisianan, Pierre-Gustave Beauregard entered Confederate service as one of the South’s earliest heroes. A West Point graduate and veteran of the Mexican-American War, Beauregard commanded the Confederate artillery barrage against Fort Sumter in April 1861, initiating the Civil War. Later at the First Battle of Bull Run, his skilled coordination of Southern forces secured a crucial Confederate victory. Beauregard also directed troops at the bloody battle of Shiloh in 1862 and oversaw the defense of Charleston against relentless Union assaults, becoming known for his strategic brilliance and meticulous preparation. Despite political friction with Jefferson Davis limiting his role, Beauregard’s legacy as one of the Confederacy’s most capable military minds endures.
