Norman Knight with Banner, 1066

The Battle of Hastings began at about 9 a.m. on 14 October 1066 and lasted all day. After the battle England was to have a new ruling class and all the misery, strife, and woe that goes with invasion and occupation. The army of Norman Conquest was made up of thousands of Norman, French, Flemish, and Breton troops, led by the Duke of Normandy; forever known as William the Conqueror. Some estimate William’s force at 12,000 men; about one half infantry, one quarter cavalry, and one quarter archers or crossbowmen. They faced some 7,000–8,000 English troops although contemporary records do not give reliable figures. Ultimately it is speculated that perhaps 2,000 Normans and 4,000 Englishmen were killed that day.

U.S. General George S. Patton Winter, 1944-45

In December 1944, Germany launched a last-ditch assault across Belgium and northeastern France in the Ardennes Offensive, also known as the Battle of the Bulge. Met with initial success the drive was stalled by determined allied resistance, notably at the now surrounded crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium. On 26 Dec., General George S. Patton launched an audacious plan to relieve the defenders of Bastogne. Employing a complex and shrewd strategy, he directed his Third Army to make a fierce counter-thrust movement and broke through the German lines, relieving the valiant defenders and ultimately pushing the Germans east across the Rhine. Here Patton wears a B-3 Bomber Jacket with his famous ivory handled, 45 caliber, Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolvers on the hip.

Alfred The Great, Anglo-Saxon King, 886

From an unlikely beginning, having four older brothers, Alfred would go on to become King of Wessex and the man most would consider to be the first king of England. While he never ruled a truly united England it was his life’s work to bring the kingdoms together by defending against the Danes and their raids and encroachments, building alliances with neighboring Mercia and Wales, and building defensive works throughout the kingdom. While an eventually united England is perhaps his most famous legacy, it is the intellectual renaissance that he propelled (he is known to have translated Boethius, Augustine, and to have promoted the learning of “such books as are the most needful for all men to know” ) that probably shaped the nature of the England to come as much as any of his acts. To this day, no other English monarch has equaled his achievements or has ever surpassed him in the right to be called “the Great.”
