Napoleonic

The Napoleonic Wars raged from 1803 to 1815 with almost every European nation involved at one point. Huge armies clashed in battle with the balance of power shifting back and forth. The tides turned against Imperial France and in 1814 the defeated Emperor Napoleon was sent into exile.

In 1815, Napoleon returned to France, seized power and resurrected his Imperial army. Just a few months later, Napoleon led his soldiers into battle for the last time at Waterloo Belgium, where he was defeated.

French Imperial Guard Reaching for Cartridge, 1815

The 1801 regulation French cartridge pouch was made of blackened calf skin with a large exterior flap. Under the main flap would be a lighter second flap which acted as a safety cover. Inside was a wooden block divided into three sections, two large square ones, each containing a pack of 15 paper cartridges, and in the middle was a block with six drilled holes containingindividual cartridges for easier access. Even more cartridges would be held in the backpack. Gun maintenance gear, spare flints, a horn or wooden practice flint, and a turnscrew would be in a small pouch outside the box proper, but still under the main flap.

British 1st Foot Guards Company Officer, 1812-16

In March 1810 a composite battalion of Guards landed in Portugal and after one year, Napoleon was pushed out. On 4 February 1812, Wellington then marched his army into Spain, to overthrow the French there. On 22 July Salamanca was taken and on the 12 August Madrid followed. When the 1st Battalion First Guards landed at Corunna and joined Wellington, a total of five Guards battalions were serving in the Peninsula. Wellington now had an army of 80,000 men, 47,000 who were British – it was time to drive the French out of Spain. Only three years later the Guards were called on again to deal with a resurgent Napoleon. On the 16 June 1815, two Guards Brigades were ordered to Quatre Bras. After heavy fighting there they were redeployed just south of the village of Waterloo to the Chateau of Hougoumont.

Old Growth Oak Tree,  Autumn

Depending on the type, oaks can be considered a medium to tall tree, as many oak trees range anywhere from 60-100 feet tall when fully grown. A fully leafed out, 70 foot oak tree can have a crown spread of 50 feet, and while all crown shapes differ, oak trees all have that distinctively oak, lobed leaf. In autumn these leaves turn from their rich greens to reds and golds, to orange and browns, in some of the most beautiful displays in the forest. With the fall’s change in temperature and loss of daylight, leaves stop their food-making process. The leaf ’s numerous cells contain chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This chemical absorbs the energy from sunlight and feeds the tree. When the chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the show begins.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. Multiple trees placed at differing angles will give your display the illusion of a dense, old growth forest.

A spontoon is a pole arm, a type of close combat weapon consisting of a long shaft topped with a fighting implement like an axe, hammer, or blade. This melee weapon extended the user’s effective range and striking power and were common weapons on postclassical battlefields of Asia and Europe. They required little to no training to master and were most effective against armored warriors on horseback – quite literally bringing the highborn knight down to the lowly man-at-arms’ level. The Renaissance saw the peak of pike development but in short order the musket replaced it as the primary weapon of the common foot soldier. In the British army, commissioned officers carried the spontoon as a symbol of their rank and to issue battlefield commands. Sergeants carried a halberd until it was replaced by the sergeant’s pike (or spontoon). During the Napoleonic Wars, it was used by the NCOs to defend the colours of a battalion or regiment from cavalry attack.

Shepherd with Three Sheep

Pastoral herding of domestic animals has been historically significant with scholars who suggest that domestic sheep have been present in some areas of northern China as early 3700 BCE. Sheep were among the first animals to have been domesticated by humans. These sheep were primarily raised for meat, milk, and skins. Woolly sheep were later bred and imported to Africa and Europe. The Roman Empire kept sheep on a wide scale – during the Roman occupation of the British Isles, a large wool processing factory was established in Winchester, England in about 50 CE. The first domestic sheep in North America arrived with Christopher Columbus’ second voyage in 1493.

Flock of Sheep

Flocking is a behavior shown by mammals, birds, fish, and even insects. These groups are formed to better detect attempted predator attacks and protect against them. For sheep, “flock” refers to a relatively small group. A larger group may be called a mob or a band. Herd is a shortened variation, more of a slang version, derived from the word “shepherd,” the individual who keeps the sheep united by “herding” them. When sheep are raised on an open range, such as a farm or ranch, and are allowed to roam free, they are called bands of sheep. Typically, a band refers to a group of sheep that is large, 500 or more.

Brown Randall Lineback Cows

The Randall Lineback breed is the last survivor of the once numerous “all-purpose” breed of cattle that became popular throughout New England beginning in the late 1600s. Numerous European cattle from different homelands were introduced into New England and, over time, these imports were mixed together. Individuals with desirable traits were selected to produce hardy, useful cattle that served local demand for milk, draft, and meat for centuries thereafter. Because they preceded the era of “purebred” cattle, the precise origin Randall Linebacks will most likely never be known.
