Norman Knight with Banner, 1066

The Battle of Hastings began at about 9 a.m. on 14 October 1066 and lasted all day. After the battle England was to have a new ruling class and all the misery, strife, and woe that goes with invasion and occupation. The army of Norman Conquest was made up of thousands of Norman, French, Flemish, and Breton troops, led by the Duke of Normandy; forever known as William the Conqueror. Some estimate William’s force at 12,000 men; about one half infantry, one quarter cavalry, and one quarter archers or crossbowmen. They faced some 7,000–8,000 English troops although contemporary records do not give reliable figures. Ultimately it is speculated that perhaps 2,000 Normans and 4,000 Englishmen were killed that day.

U.S. Tanker in Bib Overalls, 1941-45

Soldiers assigned to tank and reconnaissance units and armored infantry units in half-tracks needed cold weather gear when fighting from their armored vehicles since they did not have efficient space heating. All of the items were made of cotton twill in the OD#3 (a shade of olive drab), with the wool knit cuffs of the jacket in a similar color. Dark olive, Melton wool lined the garments for warmth. Nickel plated talon zippers closed the jacket front, the bib trouser fly, and side access pocket. Eventually, other ground fighting infantry, artillery, and ancillary units were also issued the winter combat uniform while fighting in frigid cold. The jacket itself became very popular in many of the services due to its thermal protection and ease of wearing.

Coldstream Guards Battalion Coy Officer Marching, 1792

In February 1792 Captain James Hewgill – an officer in the Coldstream Guards Regiment – published a series of pictures, representing each regiment of the British army. The images show two figures for each regiment and were by E. Dayes, at that time the official draughtsman of the Duke of York, and color tinted by the famous English artist,  Joseph Mallard William Turner, who was only 17 years old at the time. This figure represents a Battalion Officer of that regiment marching with his sword at shoulder.

Coldstream Guards Grenadier Officer Marching, 1792

Edward Dayes produced a series of illustrations of the Coldstream Guards. One figure not depicted in his collection was that of a Grenadier Officer. Our reconstruction is based on known portraits and the regulations of the period and has gold lace and buttons on his superfine wool regimental coat. He does not wear the wings associated  with the Grenadiers on his shoulders, but a pair of officers gold epaulettes, and at his neck, a gold gorget, another symbol of rank.

Coldstream Guards Grenadier NCO Marching, 1792

Another plate from the series of watercolors commissioned by Coldstream Guards officer Captain James Hewgill was a Sergeant of that regiment. The sergeant’s regimental coat is made of a better grade of wool than the enlisted men and is trimmed with gold lace rather than the plain white worsted lace specified for a sergeant in a line regiment. Of special interest is the cane hanging from a button on his left lapel as illustrated in the plate by Edward Dayes – at that time the official draughtsman of the Duke of York.

24th Foot in Full Marching Kit, 1879

This soldier marches in the five button, Other Ranks Foreign Service Tunic typical of the type worn in hot climates. His webbing is 1870 Pattern Valise Equipment made of buff leather braces and straps. This pattern was approved and issued in 1871 following acceptance trials of the Martini-Henry rifle which this “ranker” is carrying left shoulder arms. The complete kit consisted of a waist belt, two pouches, an ammunition bag, a pair of braces, two great coat straps, a mess-tin strap, two valise supporting straps, and a valise. Also attached is a bread bag and Oliver pattern water bottle. His foreign service helmet was stained with tea as was the norm in Zululand.

24th Foot OR Standing Answering Roll Call, 1879

In the British Army, the serving soldier is ordered into formation in this particular manner when roll is called. The Colour Sergeant gives the command: Squad Atten-shun! (Attention). The soldier brings his left leg up at 90 degrees and stamps down so both his feet are in a ‘V’ shape. When answering the call, the soldier stiffens his spine, throws back his shoulders, and in a loud, clear voice sounds off thusly: Color! (Unless there is an officer present, to which he replies, “Sir!” as an officer is on parade.) This is the standard for soldiers today as it was through two world wars, the Victorian Age, and,  presumably, all the way back to the New Model Army, 1645.

British 1st Foot Guards Company Officer, 1812-16

In March 1810 a composite battalion of Guards landed in Portugal and after one year, Napoleon was pushed out. On 4 February 1812, Wellington then marched his army into Spain, to overthrow the French there. On 22 July Salamanca was taken and on the 12 August Madrid followed. When the 1st Battalion First Guards landed at Corunna and joined Wellington, a total of five Guards battalions were serving in the Peninsula. Wellington now had an army of 80,000 men, 47,000 who were British – it was time to drive the French out of Spain. Only three years later the Guards were called on again to deal with a resurgent Napoleon. On the 16 June 1815, two Guards Brigades were ordered to Quatre Bras. After heavy fighting there they were redeployed just south of the village of Waterloo to the Chateau of Hougoumont.

42nd Royal Highland Regiment Pipe Major, Grenadier Company, 1758-67

Whether military or civilian, the executive director of any pipe band is the Pipe Major. The position is an appointment and not a rank, although an appointee is required to have attained the rank of at least sergeant. As Pipe Major he is responsible for the managerial and custodial duties of the pipers under him. And, as his primary responsibility is to rally and organize formations of troops headed to and on the battlefield, he works in close proximity with the commanding officer. He plays a three droned set of pipes with the regimental banner flying from the first drone further emphasizing his pride of place.
