Wrath of the Northmen - Vikings, Saxons & Normans

On the 8th of June 793, Viking long ships appeared of the Northeast coast of England in Northumberland to raid the abbey on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. In a short period of time, the abbey and surrounding village was destroyed with many of the Monks falling victim to the "wolves from the sea." Those that were not killed were carried away as slaves along with the church treasures.

So feared were the Viking raiders, that it is said that English Book of Prayer included a phrase --- A furore Normannorum libera nos, Domine, “From the fury of the Northmen deliver us, Lord.”

This Viking stands in the shield wall shoulder to shoulder with his fellow warriors, with his sword ready to strike. His name loosely translated means “The Strength of the Protection as a Rock.” Perhaps this young warrior will someday use his share of the spoils of war to acquire one of the iron helmets or even a shirt of mail his comrades wear.

The masculine name Geir is derived from Old Norse geirr, meaning “spear.” This viking takes a defensive posture but is thrusting forward with his spear; shield poised to ward off any counter attacks. Spears were generally used in this manner targeting the enemy’s chest, as even the best mail and padding would not be proof against a strong thrust with a spear. The throat and face (particularly the eyes, the weakest part of the skull) would likewise be lethal points of aim. Piercing the shoulder, while not fatal, could also incapacitate the opposing warrior. This superior weapon kept your enemy at bay, was cheap to make, and, maybe more importantly, made an untrained man reasonably dangerous very quickly.

Black Randall Lineback Cows

Dairy cattle (also called dairy cows) are bred for the ability to produce large quantities of milk. Historically, little distinction was made between dairy cattle and beef cattle, with the same stock often being used for both meat and milk production. Our cattle are referred to as the Randall Lineback, one of the earlier known breeds of cattle in North America. This breed of cattle exists in unique variations of both brown and black color. It is thought the Randall Linebacks are a combination of Dutch, French, and English cattle and are a “landrace” breed descended from common cattle in New England.

Brown Randall Lineback Cows

The Randall Lineback breed is the last survivor of the once numerous “all-purpose” breed of cattle that became popular throughout New England beginning in the late 1600s. Numerous European cattle from different homelands were introduced into New England and, over time, these imports were mixed together. Individuals with desirable traits were selected to produce hardy, useful cattle that served local demand for milk, draft, and meat for centuries thereafter. Because they preceded the era of “purebred” cattle, the precise origin Randall Linebacks will most likely never be known.

Old Growth Oak Tree,  Autumn

Depending on the type, oaks can be considered a medium to tall tree, as many oak trees range anywhere from 60-100 feet tall when fully grown. A fully leafed out, 70 foot oak tree can have a crown spread of 50 feet, and while all crown shapes differ, oak trees all have that distinctively oak, lobed leaf. In autumn these leaves turn from their rich greens to reds and golds, to orange and browns, in some of the most beautiful displays in the forest. With the fall’s change in temperature and loss of daylight, leaves stop their food-making process. The leaf ’s numerous cells contain chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This chemical absorbs the energy from sunlight and feeds the tree. When the chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the show begins.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. Multiple trees placed at differing angles will give your display the illusion of a dense, old growth forest.
