Confederate General James Longstreet

One of General Robert E. Lee’s most trusted corps commanders, James Longstreet earned a reputation as the “Old War Horse” for his steadfastness under pressure and his mastery of defensive warfare. A graduate of West Point and a veteran of the Mexican-American War, Longstreet brought a methodical, deliberate style to the Confederate high command. He played critical roles in key victories at Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga, where his leadership helped deliver one of the Confederacy’s last major triumphs in the West. At Gettysburg, he reluctantly led the controversial assault on the Union center—Pickett’s Charge—despite his tactical reservations. After the war, Longstreet’s decision to support Reconstruction and join the Republican Party made him a pariah among former Confederates, but history remembers him as one of the most capable and forward-thinking generals of the Southern cause.
