James Bowie was a 19th century American pioneer, land speculator, roustabout, and militia leader during the Texas Revolution, 1835-36. This armed insurrection against the government of Mexico was launched by Tejanos (Texas Mexicans) and colonists from the United States. The Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas rebellion with the goal of annexation. The Mexican congress declaring that any foreigners fighting against Mexican troops “will be deemed pirates and dealt with as such” – thus was the fate of Bowie and some 200 other defenders who perished at the Battle of the Alamo.
