Harriet Tubman, American Abolitionists

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery. As a child, she was beaten and abused and carried those scars with her the rest of her life. Tubman tried to escape on several occasions and, with the help of the Underground Railroad, finally fled the South to freedom. However, she would return on many occasions and lead some 70 people on the path of deliverance earning her the nickname of “Moses.” During the War, Tubman served as a nurse, a spy, a scout, and guerrilla operative. Disguised as an old woman she would travel through Confederate territory and learn of troop placements and supply lines. Tubman died in 1913 and was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
