Native American Warrior Advancing Crouched Down
Native American war parties were often small and traveled great distances, often through territory not well recorded by Europeans. Stealth was a trait learned from the elders for hunting game in the forest that proved to be just as valuable in warfare. The tried European military doctrine of the time required men to stand straight and form into columns and lines to work as a group, something the virgin forests of North America did not facilitate. It took several disastrous encounters during the various conflicts of the period before European officers took note and developed tactics suited for the new kind of war the frontier required.
