Organized in October 1861, the brigade left Texas poorly armed with many men having no weapons at all. They took with them whatever they could: shotguns, hunting rifles, some model 1841 Mississippi rifles, and even old flintlock muskets used in the Texas Revolution. However, the Texans were held in high regard thanks to the legend of the Alamo, and the Confederate government tried its best to see that they got the finest equipment available. Most of the brigade were soon issued Enfield rifles, aside from the 1st Texas Infantry which held on to their smoothbore muskets (a weapon that could discharge a “buck and ball” load) using them well into 1864.
