Union Iron Brigade Advancing Right Shoulder, No.5
This advancing Iron Brigade soldier could be just as easily considered a member of the 10th Maine Infantry Regiment, Provost Guard at Gettysburg in that they are dressed similarly. That is, attired in the standard uniform of the U.S. infantry, as set forth in the regulations of 1858. The Army Hat in black felt (minus the appropriate branch insignia) with the national eagle used to hold up the brim, the frock coat with branch piping for foot troops, and sky-blue trousers all conform to the standards for Army dress pre-Civil War. Gone are the distinctive gators that typified early Iron Brigade apparel but were detested by the great majority of those who wore them.
