British 1st Foot Guards Company Officer, 1812-16

In March 1810 a composite battalion of Guards landed in Portugal and after one year, Napoleon was pushed out. On 4 February 1812, Wellington then marched his army into Spain, to overthrow the French there. On 22 July Salamanca was taken and on the 12 August Madrid followed. When the 1st Battalion First Guards landed at Corunna and joined Wellington, a total of five Guards battalions were serving in the Peninsula. Wellington now had an army of 80,000 men, 47,000 who were British – it was time to drive the French out of Spain. Only three years later the Guards were called on again to deal with a resurgent Napoleon. On the 16 June 1815, two Guards Brigades were ordered to Quatre Bras. After heavy fighting there they were redeployed just south of the village of Waterloo to the Chateau of Hougoumont.
