Alfgeir is an Old Norse compound name of Álf- “elf,” which was not a particularly popular Scandinavian name, and -geir, meaning “spear” which was quite popular with Vikings as both a naming convention and an implement of war. This Viking is about to launch his weapon. His back muscles are coiled, his pectorals stretched across his chest. From there an involuntary contraction of the chest muscles brings his throwing arm forward with increased force while the rotation of the shoulders initiates the release. Several spears might be carried into battle. As the warrior closed these were thrown, leaving him free to unsheathe his sword or brandish his axe and commence the melee.
