Engineering and pioneer soldiers played an important part in the American military since its beginning. The primary role of pioneer units was to assist other arms in tasks such as the construction of field fortifications, military camps, bridges, and roads. At the Battle of Stones River, Pioneers played a key role in halting the Confederate advance. Fortifying their line with hasty works, ditches, and Chevaux de Frise (a medieval defensive apparatus of a log covered with many projecting wooden spikes), they gave the Union forces time to regroup. Although combat was their secondary purpose, in this battle pioneers saw front line action where they distinguished themselves as first-rate fighting men.
