The masculine name Geir is derived from Old Norse geirr, meaning “spear.” This viking takes a defensive posture but is thrusting forward with his spear; shield poised to ward off any counter attacks. Spears were generally used in this manner targeting the enemy’s chest, as even the best mail and padding would not be proof against a strong thrust with a spear. The throat and face (particularly the eyes, the weakest part of the skull) would likewise be lethal points of aim. Piercing the shoulder, while not fatal, could also incapacitate the opposing warrior. This superior weapon kept your enemy at bay, was cheap to make, and, maybe more importantly, made an untrained man reasonably dangerous very quickly.
