Tecumseh, 1810-13

The Shawnee warrior/chief Tecumseh led a resistance to the expansion of the United States onto Native American lands. An influential orator, Tecumseh formed a Native American confederacy and, with his brother Tenskwatawa, a religious prophet, established the large, multi-tribal community of Prophetstown. He proclaimed that Native Americans owned their lands in common, and urged tribes not to cede more territory unless all agreed. His message alarmed American leaders and Native leaders who sought accommodation with the U.S. In 1811, U.S. forces under William Henry Harrison destroyed Prophetstown at the Battle of Tippecanoe. Tecumseh’s efforts to unite the Native American tribes ended with his death in the War of 1812.
