Confederate General “Stonewall” Jackson No.2

Pious and eccentric, Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was second only to Robert E. Lee in military acumen and aptitude. At the First Battle of Bull Run his reinforcements countered a fierce Union assault prompting Barnard Elliott Bee Jr. to compare him to a “stone wall,” which may have been a pejorative, but the nickname stuck. He played a prominent role in nearly all engagements in the Eastern theater (the Valley Campaign, his magnum opus) until his death. While on a night-time reconnoiter of the front lines at Chancellorsville, Jackson was accidentally shot by Confederate pickets. He succumbed to his wounds and pneumonia eight days later. Many historians regard him as one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history.
