After the last soldier leaves the combat zone, and the last army pushes forward or quits the field, the scars of war remain. War is catastrophic to the environment – when the goal is to prevail by any means necessary, the environment is often the first casualty. Mature trees are the most prominent component on the landscape and as such suffer the most discernible damage. They are also sturdy and can endure an excessive amount of hardship before succumbing to their wounds. While undergrowth and grasses are relatively fast growing, trees are not and can stand as silent sentinels for years to come.
