The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment is most famous for their heroic defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg. Sergeant Andrew Jackson Tozier was the flagbearer during the battle on Little Round Top. Tozier stood at the center of the regiment with the regimental flag tucked in his right elbow while he used the rifle of a wounded member of the color guard to return fire on the attacking Confederates. The 20th Maine fought against multiple Confederate attacks and ultimately repelled them with a heroic bayonet charge when running low on ammunition. This action is considered a pivotal moment in the battle and a key factor in the Union victory at Gettysburg as it prevented the Union from being outflanked by the Confederates.
