This Saxon name is derived of two elements: “Audaz” shortened to “Ēad” (prosperity, fortune, or wealth) and “Gaizaz” simplified to “Gar” (spear or pike). Combined the name means “prosperous spearman.” As this might seem too self-serving to the average clan-based, communal society it has also come to be interrupted as “Protector of the Good.” The kite shield he carries may lend credence to an elevated status as it was originally developed for mounted cavalry – the narrow bottom protected the rider’s leg. During the 1000s its popularity spread throughout Western Europe and is illustrated in the Bayeux Tapestry where most of the English foot soldiers are depicted with kite shields.
