Coldstream Guards Grenadier NCO Marching, 1792

Another plate from the series of watercolors commissioned by Coldstream Guards officer Captain James Hewgill was a Sergeant of that regiment. The sergeant’s regimental coat is made of a better grade of wool than the enlisted men and is trimmed with gold lace rather than the plain white worsted lace specified for a sergeant in a line regiment. Of special interest is the cane hanging from a button on his left lapel as illustrated in the plate by Edward Dayes – at that time the official draughtsman of the Duke of York.
